STUDENTS WRITE ABOUT GIVING FOR DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES ESSAY CONTEST
US Fed News Service, Including US State News October 14, 2010 BROWNSVILLE, Texas, Oct. 13 — The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College issued the following news release:
La Feria High School senior John Michael Butler received a lesson he will not forget when he worked during the summer with an 8-year-old autistic boy at the city’s swimming pool.
“He taught me that all a person needs to succeed is to have someone that supports and cares for them,” Butler, 17, wrote in his first place essay for the 2010 Distinguished Lecture Series. “Some people believe that giving money is enough to show that they care. Sometimes that is all they can give, but I believe that giving your time and support is the greatest thing you can do for someone.” Fourteen faculty members and staff at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College read 695 essays on the topic “Giving: How I can incorporate giving into my life and my community” written by Rio Grande Valley public and private high school students. Sixteen finalists were chosen and received $100. The top three winners received $250, $200 and $150. go to site toms shoes coupon code
Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoe giver of TOMS Shoes and the 2010 fall Distinguished Lecture Series speaker, chose the top three essay winners. He will give the evening lecture for the Distinguished Lecture Series on Monday, Oct. 11 in the Science, Engineering & Technology Building Lecture Hall. The lecture will be streamed for high school and college students in the Gran Salon in the Student Union.
He wanted attendees to understand “the great adventure I’ve been on” with his company and to know a small idea can have a large impact. He founded the company in 2006 and recently gave away its one-millionth pair of TOMS Shoes based on the Catalonian alpargata design.
“Whenever you give it feels really good,” said Mycoskie. “Giving is a great gift in itself.” Mycoskie met with UTB/TSC students who wear TOMS Shoes before the evening lecture.
Oziel Cuellar, 17, a senior at Brownsville Porter High School who takes summer courses at UTB/TSC, said he was inspired to have a pair of black TOMS Shoes after learning about Mycoskie and his company in a television commercial. Cuellar said he liked TOMS Shoes’ mission of putting a pair of shoes on a person’s feet in an impoverished area to equal a pair purchased by a shopper.
“He’s a really nice person,” Cuellar said after taking a photograph with Mycoskie. “He was inspiring. He’s a really all around good person and he has some good ideas.” The second place essay contest winner was Jordy C. Lopez, a 17 year old senior at Valley Christian High School in Brownsville and the third place winner was Lauren Elizabeth Bothwell, a 17 year old senior at Harlingen South High School.
Lopez wrote about his school’s monthly field trips to visit families living in the landfill in the Las Bermudas colonia in Matamoros, Mexico and how he gives clean aluminum cans to people who occasionally search through his family’s outdoor garbage can.
“I really like the feeling of giving,” said Lopez. “I just thank God for these opportunities.” Bothwell wrote about the toy effort “Lauren’s Toy Drive” she started in 2001 when she was 7 years old to collect toys for children admitted to Valley Baptist Medical Center’s pediatric wing in Harlingen.
Bothwell planned to attend Mycoskie’s evening lecture and hoped he would sign a pair of her TOMS Shoes.
The essay winners were announced at the morning lecture traditionally held as part of the fall Distinguished Lecture Series. More than 1,000 students from Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, San Benito and Weslaco learned about gravitational wave astronomy from Dr. Fredrick Jenet, an associate professor in UTB/TSC’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. Jenet filled in for Mycoskie who was unable to attend the morning lecture. site toms shoes coupon code
Jenet told students about the opportunities UTB/TSC has for students to work with faculty members to research black holes and gravitational waves at the Arecibo Remote Command Center on the first floor of the Science, Engineering and Technology Building and the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy in the Cavalry Building. Students can also get involved in summer physics and astronomy programs.
“These opportunities exist here for you to get involved in this cutting edge research, which is in the forefront of knowledge of the human race,” said Jenet.
Other essay finalists were:
* Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial High School: Justin Acosta * St. Joseph Academy, Brownsville: Shadia Adjam * San Benito High School: Edwin R. Aguilar, Naomi Lyra, Rebecca Salazar * Harlingen High School: Bailey Anne Baker, Christopher Puga, April Alexandra Romero, Alexandra Lee Rowe, Dane Gregory Yates * First Baptist School, Brownsville: Thomas Human * Brownsville Pace High School: Mariano Martinez * Brownsville Lopez High School: Jaime Menchaca The Distinguished Lecture Series is an important fundraiser for UTB/TSC, providing support for student and faculty trips, research and projects for which state funds are not available.
