Lakeland Team mourns loss of another player.(Front)
The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) August 3, 2010 By Chris Carlson and Hattie Brown Garrow The Virginian-Pilot suffolk On Thursday, the last time he spoke to members of the Lakeland High School football team before the official start of the season, head coach Glenwood Ferebee warned them to be careful.
“The last thing Coach said was, ‘When y’all leave here, don’t get in trouble,’\” quarterback Walter Boykins said. “I don’t want to go to the hospital, and I don’t want to go to no more funerals.” Fewer than three days later, 18-year-old team member Tyquan Lewis was dead, shot in the neck early Sunday morning.
Lewis is the second Lakeland player killed in the past year. Michael Lee was killed in December.
“I’ve been to two funerals” since 2008, Ferebee said. During Ferebee’s first year, lineman Larry Parker died from complications related to surgery. Then, seven months ago, Lee was killed.
“The message was, ‘Do what you need to do and don’t be places that you shouldn’t be,’\” Ferebee said. “But you get that call at 3 a.m. and reality sets in. I’ve got to do a little bit more.” Lakeland held its first football practice Monday without its expected starting wide receiver and defensive back.
The morning was quiet as the team went through drills without its usual passion. During the afternoon session, coaches coaxed players to be more competitive and physical. this web site lakeland high school
“It was just weird,” said running back Raekwon Johnson , who played in the Pop Warner youth football program with Lewis. “We were doing sprints, and I just couldn’t do them. I kept thinking about it.” Quarterback Boykins hesitated each time he threw the ball to the right side, where Lewis was traditionally his target.
“I don’t know what it was, but every time I tried to throw the ball to his side, I couldn’t throw right,” Boykins said. “I try not to cry, but I’m crying deep inside. Tyquan would have told me don’t cry. But it hurts real bad.” A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 27 for the man accused of killing Lewis, 19-year-old Dontaz Wilkerson of Windsor . He is charged with first-degree murder and a series of other felonies and is being held without bond.
Police said they think Lewis and Wilkerson were involved in a fight at a party shortly before the shooting on Walnut Street. website lakeland high school
Organizers of the event said they wanted to hold a “back-to-school-type party” for college students when they reserved the Bethlehem Ruritan Club building on Manning Road, police spokeswoman Debbie George said. She wouldn’t say who rented the facility.
According to Suffolk court records, Wilkerson pleaded guilty in June to a felony charge of unlawful wounding as part of an agreement with prosecutors . A grand jury indicted Wilkerson earlier this year on four felony charges : malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of malicious wounding, discharging a firearm in a public place resulting in injury, and wounding while in the commission of a felony.
As part of the agreement, the malicious wounding charge was lessened to unlawful wounding and the other charges were withdrawn. Wilkerson was sentenced to five years with all but time served suspended, required to pay $3,900 in restitution and put on supervised probation for three years.
Those charges stemmed from an October 2009 fight on Holladay Street. Witnesses said Wilkerson – also known as “Taz” – was armed when he got into an argument with a 19-year-old man. As they struggled over the handgun, Wilkerson told a friend standing nearby to shoot his opponent. The friend missed and instead hit a 20-year-old bystander in the leg.
Lewis was a multi-sport athlete drawing attention from Division I colleges.
His friends said Lewis was eager to return to the field after missing the previous year with a torn knee ligament .
“He was even looking forward to two-a-days,” Johnson said.
Ferebee said some of the players didn’t know about Lewis’ death until Monday morning, and he considered calling off practice.
“I mentioned it to them and told them we’re not going to let his name die,” Ferebee said. “We’re grieving. We have heavy hearts. But if he was here, he’d be working hard, busting his butt, so don’t dishonor his name by going through the motions.” Chris Carlson, (757) 446-2367, chris.carlson@pilotonline.com Hattie Brown Garrow, (757) 222-5562, hattie.brown@pilotonline.com CAPTION(S):
